## Biography

Walter Newman was an American screenwriter and radio writer. Born in New York City, he earned a bachelor's degree from New York University and studied law at Harvard University. After working as a publicist and serving in the US Army during the Second World War, he moved to Los Angeles and began writing radio dramas, including scripts for Escape, Suspense, The Halls of Ivy and the pilot episode of Gunsmoke.

Newman entered film writing in the early 1950s. His credits include Ace in the Hole (1951), The Man with the Golden Arm (1955), The True Story of Jesse James (1957), The Magnificent Seven (1960, uncredited), Cat Ballou (1965) and The Champ (1979). He received three Academy Award nominations for screenwriting, for Ace in the Hole, Cat Ballou and Bloodbrothers (1978). An unproduced original script, Harrow Alley, gained a cult reputation among Hollywood writers.
