## Biography

Walter Reisch (23 May 1903 – 28 March 1983) was an Austrian-born screenwriter and director. He began his career in Vienna as an extra, title writer and assistant before moving to Berlin, where he wrote scenarios for UFA and other studios in the late 1920s and early 1930s. After working in Vienna and London to escape the Nazis, he emigrated to Hollywood in 1937.

In the United States he wrote or co-wrote the screenplays for *Ninotchka* (1939), *That Hamilton Woman* (1941), *Gaslight* (1944), *Niagara* (1953), *Titanic* (1953) and *Journey to the Center of the Earth* (1959). He shared an Academy Award for Best Original Screenplay for *Titanic* and received further nominations for *Ninotchka*, *Comrade X* (1940) and *Gaslight*. Reisch also directed a small number of films, including *Men Are Not Gods* (1936).
