## Biography

Warner Oland, born Johan Verner Ölund, was a Swedish-American actor. His family emigrated to the United States when he was 13, settling in Connecticut. He began his career in theatre, including appearances on Broadway, before making his film debut in 1912.

Oland appeared in more than 30 films over the following 15 years. He played Cantor Rabinowitz in *The Jazz Singer* (1927) and Colonel von Hindau in *Dishonored* (1931). He is best known for roles as Dr. Fu Manchu and, in 16 films, Honolulu police detective Lieutenant Charlie Chan. He portrayed Mr. Henry Chang in *Shanghai Express* (1932) and Dr. Yogami in *Werewolf of London* (1935).

Oland died in Stockholm on 6 August 1938.
