## Fi1m on Warren Clarke

> Warren Clarke made gruff, difficult men convincing without asking us to like them. His strongest work lets authority feel comfortably established, and in *Red Riding* that ease is more disturbing than a display of menace.

In *Red Riding* (2009), Warren Clarke's DCS Bill Molloy exercises authority as though nobody could reasonably question it. Alongside David Morrissey's DS Maurice Jobson, he makes the police hierarchy convincing even where the writing struggles to explain it. We were disturbed by how ordinary corruption felt in their company, because neither performance needed to keep announcing the danger. Clarke gives Molloy the comfortable manner of someone who expects little resistance. The menace comes from watching a man so thoroughly at ease with having power.

His first major film role was Dim in Stanley Kubrick's *A Clockwork Orange* (1971). Opposite Malcolm McDowell, Clarke's resentful presence already made him difficult to overlook, even in a supporting part. We find the film gripping, though its scant attention to the people Alex hurts remains a serious limitation, particularly in its treatment of sexual violence. Clarke's early impact is worth noting, but we would not make this film the whole case for him.

Through the 1970s and 1980s he accumulated supporting parts in film and television, with a lead in *Dalziel and Pascoe* (1996–2007) eventually bringing star status. As Detective Superintendent Andy Dalziel, he had a sustained opportunity to play an unlikeable authority figure. Dalziel began as a bluntly chauvinistic character and became less straightforward as the series went on. The early characterisation points to a limitation worth keeping in mind: Clarke could make a coarse man worth watching, but his presence alone could not make the part complicated.

The contrast with Andrew Garfield's exposed, unsettled Eddie Dunford helps *Red Riding*: we have a vulnerable figure through whom to approach the story, while Clarke makes the hierarchy feel established. This is where we most value him, when his physical presence tells us something about who can expect to be heard. The series does not always make its crowded plot easy to follow, and strong acting cannot resolve every confusion. Start there for Clarke, with patience for the plotting.

## Biography

Warren Clarke (born Alan James Clarke) was an English actor. He began his career in amateur dramatics and worked in repertory theatre before gaining attention with assorted television and film roles in the late 1960s.

His first major film role was as Dim in Stanley Kubrick's *A Clockwork Orange* (1971). He appeared in films including *Firefox* (1982) and *Top Secret!* (1984), and on television in *Blackadder* (1983), *Midsomer Murders* (1997) and *Call the Midwife* (2012). Clarke was best known for his long-running lead role as Detective Superintendent Andy Dalziel in the BBC series *Dalziel and Pascoe* (1996–2007).

He also directed episodes of *Dalziel and Pascoe* and returned to the stage in later years, including a portrayal of Winston Churchill.
