## Fi1m on Wayne Duvall

> Wayne Duvall gives screen authority a familiar, unforced voice, useful for a police captain and funnier in a blowhard. We value that steadiness, though his supporting parts can leave us wishing the films asked more of him.

In *O Brother, Where Art Thou?* (2000), Wayne Duvall's Homer Stokes sounds comfortable making himself heard. Duvall plays the blowhard with a natural delivery that lets the self-importance do the comic work; he need not strain for our attention. We laughed at Stokes because that combination of bluster and everyday ease makes him so recognisable. Joel and Ethan Coen give him a place in a wandering musical comedy whose pleasures survive its untidiness, and he fits its company without trying to make it all about him.

The early screen work included *Apollo 13* (1995), where he played LEM Controller White in Ron Howard's ensemble. Wider notice came with Stokes and a regular role in *The District* (2000–2004), followed by a steady run of supporting film and recurring television work. The later credits, including Senator Bluff Wade in Steven Spielberg's *Lincoln* (2012), show how often he is trusted to play the official. That is a useful casting habit, although it risks making an actor's dependability an excuse to ask him for the same thing.

*Prisoners* (2013) uses that authority more soberly, casting him as Captain Richard O'Malley. Denis Villeneuve's thriller draws its force from Hugh Jackman and Jake Gyllenhaal. Duvall keeps his supporting work in proportion: credible, direct and without an insistence on being noticed. His unforced delivery suits a film whose fear remains persuasive even when the mystery becomes too elaborate. We recommend the film with that reservation, and value Duvall's ability to supply the authority of a police captain without making the part feel like a display.

These roles leave us curious about what Duvall could do with more time at the centre of a film. They offer limited evidence, and there is no need to treat a long run of supporting work as a disappointment. For the clearest introduction, begin with *O Brother, Where Art Thou?*, then try *Prisoners* for the quieter use of the same strengths. We would welcome a director giving him more room without asking him to get louder.
