## Biography

Wendy Richard (born Wendy Emerton) was an English actress. She trained at the Italia Conti Academy of Theatre Arts and made early television appearances in series including *Dad's Army* (1968) and *On the Buses* (1971), as well as films such as *Carry On Matron* (1972) and *Carry On Girls* (1973).

She is best known for portraying Miss Shirley Brahms in the BBC sitcom *Are You Being Served?* (1972–1985) and its sequel series *Grace & Favour* (1992–1993), and as Pauline Fowler in the BBC soap opera *EastEnders* (1985–2006). Richard was appointed MBE in 2000 and received the Lifetime Achievement Award at the 2007 British Soap Awards. She died in 2009.
