## Fi1m on Wes Archer

> Wes Archer gives animated comedy believable timing and helps a series keep its character over years of work. We value his contribution to early *The Simpsons*, though its achievements cannot sensibly be credited to one director.

Bart's 'twister mouth' is a useful place to begin with Wes Archer, who introduced that small piece of facial animation. It is a modest claim beside directing whole episodes, but it tells us something about the scale at which comedy is made. A character needs more than a good line; the face has to help deliver it. Archer's stated concern with physics, action and reaction gives us a useful way to watch his work. We rate that attention to timing, particularly when it helps absurd behaviour feel believable.

In *The Simpsons* (1989), that care belonged to a shared effort from the beginning. Archer had animated the shorts on *The Tracey Ullman Show* in 1987 alongside David Silverman and Bill Kopp, and went on to direct episodes across the half-hour series' first seven seasons. His frequent work with writer John Swartzwelder matters here: written jokes still need someone to decide how they play. He also helped establish the early series' consistent look through reference among animators. We laughed at the people making fools of themselves, then felt unexpectedly fond of them; the programme allows their foolishness without withdrawing its tenderness.

The move to supervising *King of the Hill* (1997), Mike Judge's series, made maintaining a programme's character a long-term responsibility. Archer held that role from 1997 to 2009 and returned for the revival. His directing work on *Futurama* (1999), and later supervision on *Rick and Morty*, also place him within programmes with established worlds. His emphasis on respecting each world's rules is worth taking seriously. Believable timing does not require realistic events, but it does require us to understand how an action produces a reaction.

The shared credit matters when judging him. Silverman, Swartzwelder and the other collaborators help explain why the early *Simpsons* works, and we would not recommend every episode of the series. Archer's contribution is worth seeking out for the patient attention to how these characters move and react, rather than on the assumption that his name guarantees good writing. Start with the early *Simpsons*, and keep an eye on Bart.
