## Biography

Whitman Chambers was an American novelist and screenwriter. Born Elwyn Whitman Chambers on 8 December 1896 in Stockton, California, he graduated from the University of California in 1920 after naval service in the First World War and worked as a reporter for San Francisco newspapers. He began publishing fiction in the 1920s, initially Western stories, before turning to hard-boiled mystery and suspense novels, several set in the San Francisco Bay Area.

Chambers spent seventeen years in Hollywood as a screenwriter for studios including Paramount, United Artists, Universal and Warner Bros. His credits include the screenplay for *Shadow of a Woman* (1946), *Manhandled* (1949) and an uncredited contribution to *To Have and Have Not* (1945). Several of his novels were adapted for film, among them *Once Too Often* as *Blonde Ice* (1948) and *The Come-On* (1956). He also wrote for television series in the late 1950s and early 1960s. Chambers died on 20 July 1968 in Los Angeles.
