## Biography

William Anthony McGuire (9 July 1881 – 16 September 1940) was an American playwright, theatre director, producer and screenwriter. Born in Chicago, Illinois, he made his Broadway debut in 1910 as author of the play *The Heights*.

McGuire wrote, directed and produced a series of Broadway musicals and plays during the 1920s, including *Kid Boots* (1923), *Whoopee!* (1928), *The Three Musketeers* (1928) and *Rosalie* (1928). He later worked in Hollywood, writing screenplays for films such as *The Kid from Spain* (1932) and *Rosalie* (1937).

His screenplay for the MGM musical *The Great Ziegfeld* (1936) earned him an Academy Award nomination. McGuire died in Beverly Hills, California.
