## Fi1m on William Beck

> Beck plays doctors who would rather be right than liked, and lets us see the bill for it. One long television part carries his reputation, and he has earned that; the work outside it is sound rather than memorable.

Watch Dylan Keogh listen to a patient. He does not nod, he does not soften his face, and when he speaks it is to tell them something they did not want to hear, briefly and usually correctly. What Beck adds is a second thing going on behind the first: the man knows how he sounds, would change it if he could, and cannot. Our review of *Casualty* called Keogh a consultant who is rude to everyone and right most of the time, and said Beck lets you see what the rudeness costs him. That is the whole act, and it has held for more than a decade.

He had been working for a dozen years before he got there, mostly in support: Neil in *Snatch* (2000), Royston White in *Robin Hood* (2006), a part cut short when the character was killed off early in the run, John Thorpe in *Northanger Abbey* (2007), Dolly Williamson in *The Suspicions of Mr Whicher* (2011). Competent, unshowy credits, the sort that keep an actor employed without making anyone look him up. He joined *Casualty* in March 2011, left at the end of 2012, came back in October 2014 and has not left since; by 2024 he had passed 400 episodes and he is now the programme's longest-serving cast member. He briefly studied medicine before training as an actor, which may be why his doctors read a chart as if it says something.

Long-running television asks for a particular skill, which is doing the same thing for years without it going stale, and Beck has it. Keogh arrived as a shambolic diagnostician and has been allowed to get more complicated rather than more lovable. Beck is at his best in a corridor with Derek Thompson's Charlie Fairhead, who withholds in a quieter key, and Charles Venn's Jacob Masters, who supplies the warmth the other two will not. Since 2023 the series has been cut into themed runs of twelve episodes, and the longer arcs give him room to let a grievance build. We did not expect to mind what happened to a man we would not want treating us, and we did, because of the pauses: Beck leaves a beat before the unkind line, long enough to show Keogh deciding to say it anyway.

The honest caveat is that the reputation rests on one part. The film work has stayed supporting, *Bitter Harvest* (2017) being the most recent we know of, and the guest turns in *Midsomer Murders* and *Death in Paradise* trade on the same gruff competence without stretching it. Whether he could carry something that did not come with a stethoscope we do not know, because nobody has asked. He leads the fortieth-anniversary episodes, and the praise he drew for them is deserved. Someone should now hand him a part with no hospital in it and see what happens.
