He began his career in the theatre before moving into film in the 1930s and 1940s, directing a range of B-movies for studios including Columbia Pictures. These included *House on Haunted Hill* (1959), *The Tingler* (1959), *13 Ghosts* (1960), *Homicidal* (1961) and *Strait-Jacket* (1964). He also produced *Rosemary's Baby* (1968), directed by Roman Polanski. Castle was born William Schloss Jr. in New York City and later adopted his professional name.
