## Biography

William H. Daniels was an American cinematographer. He began his career as an assistant cameraman and worked on early films directed by Erich von Stroheim, including *Foolish Wives* (1922) and *Greed* (1925). He later became the principal cinematographer for Greta Garbo at Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer, shooting all but three of her films for the studio between 1926 and 1939.

Daniels' credits include *Grand Hotel* (1932), *Ninotchka* (1939), *The Shop Around the Corner* (1940), *The Naked City* (1948), *Harvey* (1950), *Winchester '73* (1950), *Cat on a Hot Tin Roof* (1958), *Ocean's Eleven* (1960), *How the West Was Won* (1962) and *Von Ryan's Express* (1965). He won the Academy Award for Best Cinematography for *The Naked City* and served as president of the American Society of Cinematographers from 1961 to 1963.
