## Fi1m on William H. Macy

> William H. Macy makes worried men worth watching by taking their efforts seriously, however badly they behave. We value his precision and his refusal to sneer at a character; the trouble comes when worry is all a script gives him.

In *Fargo* (1996), William H. Macy makes Jerry Lundegaard's uncertainty almost painful to watch. We laughed, then felt uneasy, because Macy keeps the man recognisable even as his behaviour becomes appalling. He never turns Jerry into a simple invitation to jeer. Alongside Frances McDormand, Steve Buscemi and Peter Stormare, he helps keep Joel and Ethan Coen's crime film frightening as well as funny.

His work with David Mamet, including *Oleanna* (1994), helps explain the precise timing and control of complicated dialogue. Yet Macy also allows enough awkwardness into a performance to stop that precision becoming merely tidy. The limitation is familiar casting: after *Fargo*, the worried man down on his luck could too easily become the entire part, leaving him to find distinctions the writing had not supplied.

Paul Thomas Anderson's *Boogie Nights* (1997) and *Magnolia* (1999) gave that detailed character work room within busy ensembles. Macy can make a supporting part matter without treating the other actors as competition. The sustained television lead of Frank Gallagher in *Shameless* (2011–2021) was a change of scale after years of supporting film roles.

In *Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes* (2024), his Trevathan seems to have stopped pretending that the bargain he made was a good one. Macy makes the man's resignation clear without making it an appeal for sympathy. The film does not have enough story for its length, but this performance gives us a specific human failing to consider.

*The Running Man* (2025) gives his Molie a more mechanical task: handing on a new name and face so that the chase can start again elsewhere. The film is well cast, but its repeated restarts leave little room for a supporting actor to change its course. Start with *Fargo*, but do not expect the laughter to come comfortably.
