## Biography

William Hurlbut, also credited as William J. Hurlbut, was an American screenwriter and playwright. Born in Belvidere, Illinois, he wrote numerous plays for Broadway from the 1900s onwards, including *The Fighting Hope* (1908) and *Lilies of the Field* (1921), before relocating to Hollywood in the early 1930s.

His screenwriting credits include *Secret of the Blue Room* (1933), *Ladies Must Love* (1933), *Imitation of Life* (1934) and, with John L. Balderston, the screenplay for *Bride of Frankenstein* (1935). He contributed to other films such as *There's Always Tomorrow* (1934) and *Adam Had Four Sons* (1941), and later wrote episodes for the television series *Lux Video Theatre*.

Hurlbut died in Hollywood, California, in 1957.
