## Biography

William L. Pereira was an American architect and production designer. Born in Chicago, he trained at the University of Illinois and initially worked in architecture before a short period in Hollywood during the 1940s.

He served as production designer on *Jane Eyre* (1943) and *Since You Went Away* (1944). Earlier, he contributed special photographic effects to *Reap the Wild Wind* (1942), for which he shared an Academy Award. He later worked as a producer on films including *Johnny Angel* (1945) and *From This Day Forward* (1946).

Pereira returned to architecture after the war and became known for designs such as the Transamerica Pyramid and the master plan for the University of California, Irvine. He died in Los Angeles in 1985.
