Born in Los Angeles in 1922, he appeared in hundreds of film and television roles. He played Mayor Schubert in the 1967 film *In the Heat of the Night*. Schallert was known for recurring roles including Martin Lane in *The Patty Duke Show* (1963–1966) and Leander Pomfritt in *The Many Loves of Dobie Gillis* (1959–1963), as well as Nilz Baris in the *Star Trek* episode "The Trouble with Tribbles" (1967). He served as president of the Screen Actors Guild from 1979 to 1981.
