He is credited as Zara in *Pickup on South Street* (1953) and as Jason Tully in *The Man Who Shot Liberty Valance* (1962). He appeared in numerous films directed by John Ford, including *The Horse Soldiers* (1959), *Sergeant Rutledge* (1960) and *Two Rode Together* (1961), and delivered the final line of *The Man Who Shot Liberty Valance*. Other film roles include Lt. Ted Wilks in *The Big Heat* (1953). On television he guest-starred in series including *The Twilight Zone*, *Bonanza*, *The Munsters* and *Get Smart*, and played judges in 23 episodes of *Perry Mason*.
