## Biography

Winton C. Hoch was an American cinematographer. Born in Storm Lake, Iowa, he moved to California in 1924 and graduated as a chemist from the California Institute of Technology in 1931. He joined the Technicolor company in 1934 as a research physicist, contributing to the development of its three-colour process, and began working as a cinematographer in 1936. Hoch never photographed a black-and-white feature film.

He collaborated frequently with director John Ford, serving as director of photography on *3 Godfathers* (1948), *She Wore a Yellow Ribbon* (1949), *The Quiet Man* (1952), *Mister Roberts* (1955) and *The Searchers* (1956). Hoch received Academy Awards for colour cinematography on *Joan of Arc* (1948), *She Wore a Yellow Ribbon* and *The Quiet Man*, the last shared with second-unit cinematographer Archie Stout. He also worked on television series including *Voyage to the Bottom of the Sea* and *The Time Tunnel*, and was elected president of the American Society of Cinematographers.
