## Biography

Wu Tianming (5 December 1939 – 4 March 2014) was a Chinese film director and producer. He was born in Sanyuan County, Shaanxi Province, and died in Beijing.

He studied film directing at the Beijing Film Academy in the mid-1970s and later served as head of the Xi'an Film Studio from 1983. In that role he produced films by younger directors, including Tian Zhuangzhuang's *The Horse Thief* (1986) and Zhang Yimou's *Red Sorghum* (1987).

Wu directed several features himself, among them *River Without Buoys* (1983), *Old Well* (1986) and *The King of Masks* (1995). He received Golden Rooster Awards for best director for the latter two films.
