> Yann Demange makes films about people who do not belong where they are standing. He is best when the light is going and somebody is following them: tense, physical, seen from one frightened head. There is not enough of it.

A car crawls along a country road at the speed limit because it cannot be seen to do anything else, and a sheriff's car keeps pace behind it. The light is going orange behind the trees. In the first hour of *Lovecraft Country* (2020) Yann Demange holds on that drive for a long time before anything with teeth turns up, and when the creatures come they are almost a relief. We could hardly breathe, and nothing supernatural had happened. The episodes that follow, which he did not direct, never frighten like that again.

That drive is his method in miniature: one person in a place that does not want them, seen from close enough that we cannot look around for help either. He learned it in British television, on *Secret Diary of a Call Girl* (2007), *Dead Set* (2008) and four episodes of *Top Boy* (2011) in Hackney, and he made it the whole of his first feature, *'71* (2014), a thriller set in Belfast during the Troubles and built around one man, Gary Hook, and what he can see. The riot and the chases are shot handheld, from inside the panic, and the night passages go looser and stranger than strict realism would allow, while the talking scenes settle the camera down. Tat Radcliffe has shot two of his films, and the two ways of shooting sit together rather than fight.

Demange has said his protagonists are inside outsiders, and it is the one description of his work that fits everything in it. He was born in Paris, works in Britain and America, and keeps returning to people who know the rules of a place without being covered by them. *White Boy Rick* (2018), his first American feature, took that figure to 1980s Detroit and a true story, and put emerging and non-professional actors around it, which he does well. It is also where the case against him is made: the film has too many stories and too many tones running at once, and they pull against each other. He is better with one thread and a deadline than with a decade.

Since then there has been a short, *Dammi* (2023), and a long attachment to *Blade* that ended in 2024 when he left the project. That is a thin stretch for a director who could make a slow drive at dusk feel like a held breath. He needs one man, one night and a reason to keep moving. Somebody should give him those and not much else.

He began his career in television, directing episodes of series including *Secret Diary of a Call Girl* (2007), *Dead Set* (2008), *Criminal Justice* (2009) and *Top Boy* (2011). His feature film debut was the independent drama *'71* (2014), for which he received the British Independent Film Award for Best Director. He later directed *White Boy Rick* (2018) and an episode of the series *Lovecraft Country* (2020).
