## Fi1m on Yoo Ah-in

> Yoo Ah-in is at his most persuasive when a character struggles to make himself understood. We rate the restraint of *Burning* highly: he makes frustration absorbing without asking us to excuse the man who feels it.

In *Burning* (2018), Yoo Ah-in lets us see how badly Lee Jong-su wants something before the young man can bring himself to ask for it. There is little satisfaction in watching him struggle, and Yoo does not soften him into an appealing underdog. We found his helplessness painful, especially in his inability to accept that Hae-mi has wishes of her own. The frustration remains visible even when Jong-su has almost nothing to give anyone else. It is a difficult character to sustain, and a performance we recommend with confidence.

After the wider attention of *Sungkyunkwan Scandal* (2010) and *Punch* (2011), the two leading roles of 2015 made clear how differently he could be cast. *Veteran* (2015) gave him Jo Tae-oh, a ruthless wealthy heir; *The Throne* (2015) gave him Crown Prince Sado. These established him as a leading actor before *Burning* brought him international attention. The quieter film acting marks a change from the broader early television work criticised in *Fashion King* (2012). We are most interested in what happens when he is allowed to do less.

Director Lee Chang-dong gives that uncertainty time, occasionally more than it needs, but he also gives Yoo something precise to play: the wish to have a suspicion confirmed. Jong-su’s attention to Ben holds us because we can follow the need behind it without accepting his reasoning. Yoo’s restraint lets us consider how much Jong-su’s desires affect his judgement. The caveat belongs to the thriller around him: viewers waiting for an investigation may tire of watching a man dwell on what he thinks he knows.

His quieter work depends on small reactions and on what his body can communicate when there is little outward action. *Voice of Silence* (2020), with Yoo as the mute Tae-in, offers another role built around physical performance. That approach suits him, but it needs a director who can make waiting and watching matter. Start with *Burning*, unless tonight calls for a thriller that gets straight to the next clue.

## Biography

Yoo Ah-in is a South Korean actor. Born Uhm Hong-sik on 6 October 1986 in Nam District, Daegu, he began acting in 2003 and first gained attention for his lead role in the coming-of-age film *Punch* (2011).

He is known for performances in *Veteran* (2015), *The Throne* (2015), *Burning* (2018) as Lee Jong-su, *#Alive* (2020), *Voice of Silence* (2020) and the series *Hellbound* (2021). Yoo has received two Blue Dragon Film Awards and two Baeksang Arts Awards.

Alongside acting, he works as a creative director and gallerist with the artist collective Studio Concrete. In 2019 he was selected by Riccardo Tisci as Burberry’s only male global ambassador.
