## Biography

Yoshiaki Hanayagi was a Japanese actor. Born Aoyama Masaru in 1924, he was adopted at a young age by the actor Hanayagi Shotaro. He made his stage debut in November 1933 at the Meijiza Theatre.

Hanayagi appeared in Kenji Mizoguchi films, playing Tamijirô Onoue in *The Story of the Last Chrysanthemum* (1939) and Zushiô in *Sansho the Bailiff* (1954). He later mentored younger actors in the Seinen no Kai group and died in 1978 after collapsing on stage during a performance at the Shinbashi Enbujo Theatre.
