## Biography

Yoshiko Tsubouchi (also credited as 坪内美詠子 or Mieko Tsubouchi) was a Japanese actress. Born in Tokyo on 22 June 1915, she was scouted from a Ginza café and joined the Shochiku Kamata studio in 1932. She made her film debut the following year and became a leading actress in pre-war productions.

She appeared in early films by Yasujirō Ozu, including *A Story of Floating Weeds* (1934) as Otoki and *The Only Son* (1936) as Sugiko. After the war she worked freelance, often in supporting roles, and changed her professional name around 1955. She continued in film and television until the late 1960s, with a notable recurring part as a bar owner in the NHK series *Jiken kisha*.

Tsubouchi died on 3 November 1985.
