## Biography

Yoshinobu Nishioka was a Japanese production designer, art director and producer specialising in jidaigeki period dramas. He joined Daiei Kyoto Studios in 1948 and received his first art director credit on *Tenpo Suikoden* (1952). After the studio's bankruptcy he co-founded Eizo Kyoto Productions.

Nishioka worked on numerous films including *Gate of Hell* (1953), *An Actor's Revenge* (1963), several entries in the Zatoichi and Lone Wolf and Cub series, *The Twilight Samurai* (2002) and *The Hidden Blade* (2004). He also produced some later projects and received Mainichi Film Awards for art direction and Japan Academy Prizes for Outstanding Achievement in Art Direction.
