## Biography

Yuri Gantman (Юрий Самсонович Гантман) was a Soviet cinematographer. He graduated from the All-Union State Institute of Cinematography (VGIK) in 1955. From 1957 he worked as a cinematographer at the Odessa Film Studio, moving to Mosfilm in 1964.

Gantman served as one of the directors of photography on Akira Kurosawa’s *Dersu Uzala* (1975), alongside Asakazu Nakai and Fyodor Dobronravov. His other credits include *Vremya, vperyod!* (1965, with N. Ardashnikov), *Russkoye pole* (1972), *Krakh* (1969) and *34-y skoryy* (1981). He was named Honoured Artist of the RSFSR in 1976 and became a Candidate of Art History in 1983.
