He does it well. The films we have reviewed have not yet asked him for anything else. Yuri Kolokolnikov is usually the tallest man in the frame and the film usually knows it. In *Caught Stealing* (2025) he and Nikita Kukushkin play Aleksei and Pavel, the Russians on the tail of Austin Butler's Hank round a dirty 1998 New York, and Aronofsky gives them one note apiece and has them hit it hard. Kolokolnikov hits his. It is the job Western producers have offered him since *Game of Thrones* in 2014, when he played Styr, leader of the Thenn wildlings, and became the man you ring when you need someone large, foreign and frightening by the end of his first scene. The career since then runs on two tracks. In Russia there is theatre and film, including Korovyev in *The Master and Margarita* (2023), which we have not reviewed and will not judge. In the West there are the heavies: Ivan, a Belarusian mercenary, in *The Hitman's Bodyguard* (2017); Gennadi Bystrov, a Soviet defector, in *The Americans* (2017), a part with more to it than most; Volkov in *Tenet* (2020). Of that last one we have to be honest. A week after seeing it we could not describe what he had done in it, and we do not think that was his fault. Nolan's people are instructions in good coats and the sound mix swallows half of what anyone says. He has said of the director that "Chris somehow collects all the energy around himself and, after filming, you can only go to bed, nothing more." On the evidence of the screen, the energy stayed with Nolan. *Kraven the Hunter* (2024) casts him as Semyon Chorney in a film where Russell Crowe and Alessandro Nivola have a good time and the script explains everything twice. He is part of the set dressing there, and our review did not find a reason to pick him out. That makes three films in which we have watched him and remembered mainly his height, which is a fact about the parts rather than the actor. The complaint that follows him is typecasting as the Russian bad guy, and the parts he has been handed in English make the complaint hard to answer. What he actually does, when the note is his to hit, is commit. There is no winking in his Aleksei, no sense of an actor above the material; he plays a thug as though the thug believed in himself, and the film is funnier for it. That is a real skill and a limited one, and we cannot say from what we have reviewed whether there is more. He has said he wants roles where "you yourself walk on the razor's edge and encounter some dangerous energies." So far the films have hired the danger and left the edge at home.
