We value him most when directors give his abrasive comedy room to develop, rather than simply casting him to look tough. In *Maine-Océan* (1986), Yves Afonso’s sailor Marcel Petitgas speaks with a distinctive Vendéen accent and an irascibility that is hard to ignore. We laughed at the delivery; Afonso makes the sailor’s bad temper funny without making him agreeable. The square jaw and boxer’s nose are useful shorthand for the tough men he was often cast to play. The eccentric voice gives us a reason to keep listening once we have taken in the face. His early film work with Jean-Luc Godard included small parts in *Masculin Féminin* (1966), *Made in U.S.A.* (1966) and *Weekend* (1967).
