## Fi1m on Zero Mostel

> Zero Mostel makes scheming and desperation funny through the sheer size of his reactions. We value him most when another actor can answer back: *The Producers* gives his excess a purpose, and Gene Wilder gives it someone to contend with.

In *The Producers* (1968), Zero Mostel's Max Bialystock seems to crowd Gene Wilder's Leo Bloom out of the picture. His expansiveness is funny partly because Wilder makes nervousness so precise. We laughed hardest at the mismatch, because Wilder's tight control makes Mostel's excess look even less containable. Yet Mostel leaves his partner space to land a laugh, which is what stops all that energy becoming exhausting.

His early screen work included *Du Barry Was a Lady* (1943) and *Panic in the Streets* (1950), before a substantial stretch of stage work. *Ulysses in Nighttown* (1958) restored his prominence, followed by *Rhinoceros* (1961), where his physical control served the transformation of a man into an animal. Musical comedy brought *A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum* (1962) and the original Tevye in *Fiddler on the Roof* (1964). The 1966 film version of *Forum* brought him back to the cinema, ahead of *The Producers*. His later work included the dramatic role of Hecky Brown in *The Front* (1976).

Mostel's rubbery face and exaggerated gestures suit men whose vanity is difficult to disguise. The desperation beneath the scheming helps us stay interested after the first laugh at his excess. But his improvisation could disrupt colleagues and pull attention away from the material, notably during the stage runs of *Forum* and *Fiddler on the Roof*. There is a real difference between surprising a fellow performer and simply making their job harder. We can enjoy the unpredictability without treating every ad-lib as a gift.

In Brooks's film, the satire has enough bite to keep the slapstick from becoming merely busy. Mostel was blacklisted during the 1950s following his testimony before the House Un-American Activities Committee. He achieved major success on Broadway, winning Tony Awards for his performances in *Rhinoceros* (1961), *A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum* (1963) and as Tevye in *Fiddler on the Roof* (1965). He also appeared in *The Front* (1976).
