## Fi1m on Zhang Hanyu

> Zhang Hanyu’s low, resonant voice and steady authority make him a persuasive screen leader. We value him most when the writing gives that determination time to develop beyond the demands of an action sequence.

Zhang Hanyu’s low, resonant voice makes giving an order seem the most natural thing he could do. As fleet commander Gao Yun in *Operation Red Sea* (2018), he occupies familiar territory for an actor repeatedly cast as soldiers, police officers and men with difficult duties. We rate him as a convincing screen leader, particularly when a film allows that resolve to develop over time. His presence is useful in an ensemble, but it cannot compensate for thinly written characters.

Feng Xiaogang’s *Assembly* (2007) was the breakthrough after smaller parts, including work for the same director. As Captain Gu Zidi, Zhang had a soldier’s long pursuit of recognition for his comrades to sustain across decades. That part asks more of determination than simply getting through an action sequence. His earlier work dubbing films helps explain why the voice remains such a conspicuous tool.

Dante Lam’s *Operation Red Sea* gives us much less to hold on to. We felt worn down by its punishing violence because the characters were too thin to make the prolonged peril matter. The action is technically skilful, but the choppy storytelling keeps interrupting our involvement. Zhang’s supporting position as the fleet commander is worth remembering here: the film gives us limited grounds for judging what he can do with a leading role.

Tsui Hark cast him as undercover operative Yang Zirong in *The Taking of Tiger Mountain* (2014). *Operation Mekong* (2016) and *The Captain* (2019) continued to draw on his authority, the latter casting him as pilot Liu Changjian. Guan Hu’s crime drama *Mr. Six* (2015) provided a part outside the military as Men San Er. His association with determined leaders is understandable, though it risks making each new role feel familiar before he has spoken.

We would welcome more parts that let him be uncertain or awkward. Repeatedly relying on that dependable bearing risks leaving the actor too little to do, however useful it may be to a busy action director. Start with *Assembly* if the fleet commander in *Operation Red Sea* leaves you wondering what else Zhang can offer.
