## Fi1m on Zheng Xi

> Zheng Xi’s skill lies in fitting a voice to another actor’s performance, or carrying an animated character through different ages. We value that precision, though *Jiang Ziya* gives it a muddled story to serve.

In *Jiang Ziya* (2020), Zheng Xi has to voice the same character at markedly different ages, keeping him recognisable through changes in the voice. It is a useful introduction to an actor whose strengths are warmth, emotional flexibility and the precision needed to fit his delivery to a character. The age changes set him a clear technical task, but the more important job is getting us interested in the person speaking. We find a capable leading voice here, although the film keeps our attention too busy elsewhere. His skill is worth hearing; the tangled storytelling means this is a qualified recommendation.

His route to that animated lead ran through television dubbing from around 2010 and film dubbing from 2013, with directing responsibilities following in 2016. On *Ode to Joy* (2016), he worked as dubbing director, a job encompassing voice casting and performance. The live-action roles make clear why close attention to another performer matters: he voices Chang Chen’s Jiu Chen in *Love and Destiny* (2019) and Nick Cheung’s Chen Jiahao in *The Silent Witness* (2019). His delivery has to fit the rhythm and style already present on screen, without flattening the character’s feelings. That close matching is a particular strength, and a less conspicuous demand than voicing one man across several stages of life.

In Cheng Teng and Li Wei’s *Jiang Ziya*, however, the difficulty is knowing what should matter to the man at the centre. We were frustrated because following Xie Xiying’s screenplay took attention we wanted to give to the characters. Zheng shares the voice cast with Ji Guanlin as Jiuwei and Yang Ning as Xiao Jiu, but even that central group is harder to get to know than it needs to be. The animation gives us enough to admire that we would not dismiss the film, and its weaknesses are no reason to dismiss its lead actor. Start here for the demands it places on Zheng, with some patience for the story surrounding him.
