*In a sentence:* Six friends make interrupting one another look like a workable arrangement for adult life

> *Friends* earns its warmth through six sharply matched performances, with Jennifer Aniston particularly good at making embarrassment funny. The writing strains and the social circle can feel airless, but we still recommend an evening in their company.

## Synopsis

In Manhattan, Rachel Green (Jennifer Aniston), Monica Geller (Courteney Cox) and Phoebe Buffay (Lisa Kudrow) form a circle with Joey Tribbiani (Matt LeBlanc), Chandler Bing (Matthew Perry) and Ross Geller (David Schwimmer). These six young adults are trying to manage their own lives while remaining closely involved in one another’s. Personal worries become group conversations, with each friend supplying advice, sympathy or another complication. The comedy stays close to this shared company, following people for whom friendship means having an audience for the business of becoming an adult.

## Review

*Friends* is good company, though we would not ask it for a broad account of adult life. Created by Marta Kauffman and David Crane, it makes the closeness of its central group the main attraction, and the six performances give that closeness enough friction to keep it funny. The writing can be laboured, and the programme’s interest in the world beyond these people is limited. We recommend it for the cast, with the warning that affection sometimes has to do work the jokes should have done.

Jennifer Aniston is particularly good at making Rachel Green’s wish to seem composed interfere with her ability to speak naturally. We laughed at her awkward pauses and then felt for her, because she lets the effort of recovering her dignity show. Courteney Cox gives Monica Geller a firmer rhythm, making a useful contrast without seeming to belong to a different programme. Their performances are persuasive because both leave space for irritation inside the affection.

Matthew Perry makes Chandler Bing’s quickness feel slightly defensive; he can get a laugh simply by putting unexpected pressure on a word. David Schwimmer gives Ross Geller’s discomfort a physical weight that can make a routine exchange funnier than its wording warrants. Matt LeBlanc, as Joey Tribbiani, provides an effective contrast to both, while Lisa Kudrow’s Phoebe Buffay refuses to settle into quite the same rhythm as anybody else. We believe these people enjoy one another’s company, even when the writing is busy demonstrating their differences.

The visual approach is plainer. The cinematography, by contributors including Ken Lamkin and Nick McLean, leaves faces easy to read without giving us much else to study. Debra McGuire’s costume design gives the group a little more individuality than the lighting does. Editors including Jay Scherberth and Stephen Prime give reactions room to register, though the emphasis on some punchlines makes the exchanges feel rehearsed.

The larger reservation is how readily familiarity becomes an excuse. The programme can treat its own small social circle as sufficient explanation for everybody’s behaviour, and some of the dated material asks us to laugh along with assumptions it has scarcely examined. Warmth helps, but it cannot make a forced joke sound spontaneous. The performances occasionally seem to be working around the writing, and the effort is more noticeable because the cast can usually make conversation feel so easy.

Most critics are less persuaded than we are: the reviews question the writing and the group’s insulation from ordinary life. We share those objections, but think they give too little weight to how much the actors achieve together. For an ensemble sitcom, making us care who is listening can matter as much as giving somebody a clever line. *Friends* repeatedly earns that interest, which is why a merely adequate exchange can still be enjoyable.

There are ten series here, so a fondness for these performances matters more than an appetite for a particular plot. Start with the opening episodes rather than treating the whole run as an obligation. If the company does not appeal, repetition is unlikely to improve the evening.

## What the critics say

Most critics like Friends, and the praise settles on the ensemble. The leads are credited with an easy chemistry that carries the writing through its thinner patches, and the sharper reviews argue the series is at its best when it stays close to its subject: twentysomethings in dead-end jobs, dating badly and growing up slowly. Several critics writing years after the fact find it has worn well, and one or two argue it was more forward-looking on women and gay parents than its reputation now allows.

The reservations divide by era. The two reviews of the 1994 pilot are the coolest, Variety in particular finding the cast livelier than the scripts and asking for funnier writing. The later dissent comes from /Film, which finds the show comforting but insular and dated, sealed off from anything happening outside its apartments. Even admirers concede a soap-opera drift in the later seasons. The spread is moderate, and nobody dislikes it.

## Straight answers

**Is Friends worth watching?**

*Friends* is worth watching for anyone who enjoys an ensemble comedy carried by its cast, and we scored it 78. The six performances make the group's closeness funny, with Jennifer Aniston particularly good at turning embarrassment into laughs. The writing can be laboured and the social circle airless, so a fondness for the company matters more than any particular plot.

**Where can I watch Friends in Slovenia?**

*Friends* is streaming on HBO Max and Netflix in Slovenia. Availability is checked daily; the links above go straight to each service.

**How violent or frightening is Friends, and is it suitable for children?**

*Friends* is not violent or frightening; it is a comedy about six adults managing their lives and one another's. It carries a UK 15 certificate and a US TV-PG rating, which points to adult conversation and relationship humour rather than anything alarming. Some of the dated material rests on assumptions the programme has not examined, which parents may want to bear in mind for younger teenagers.

**How does Friends compare to Cheers?**

*Friends* is the warmer of the two, while [*Cheers*](https://film.one/tv/cheers) is the sharper. Both are ensemble comedies about familiar company, but *Cheers* makes its arguments and bruised egos the attraction, and *Friends* leans on affection between its six leads. Viewers who prefer a good insult will find *Cheers* the tighter watch; those who want to like the people they spend time with should choose *Friends*.

**What should I watch after Friends?**

After *Friends*, try [*Cheers*](https://film.one/tv/cheers) (1982, Fi1m 88): Another ensemble whose sharp exchanges make familiar company worth returning to. Then [*The Mary Tyler Moore Show*](https://film.one/tv/the-mary-tyler-moore-show) (1970, Fi1m 88): For character comedy that allows affection and professional frustration equal space; and [*Spaced*](https://film.one/tv/spaced) (1999, Fi1m 86): A smaller circle of friends, with scruffier surroundings and more visual invention.
