# Mystery series

A mystery series promises to withhold something for weeks, and the question we ask is what it gives us while we wait. The good ones make the waiting the point: a detective worth sitting beside, a squad room or a newsroom that stays interesting after the clues run out. The poor ones treat each episode as a delivery van for the next reveal, and are forgotten the moment the answer arrives. The best of what we hold is mostly older than the rest of it.

Start with [Homicide: Life on the Street](/tv/homicide-life-on-the-street), 89, for Andre Braugher and detectives more absorbing than their cases. Then [Prime Suspect](/tv/prime-suspect), 88, for Helen Mirren being right and resented for it, and [Happy Valley](/tv/happy-valley-2014), 88, for Sarah Lancashire and a plot that matters less than what it does to people. After those, Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy asks for patience and pays it back, and Columbo is there for evenings when you would rather laugh.
