# Sport series

Nobody watches a sports series for the result. The scoreboard is a device for making people reveal themselves, and the good ones know this: the match is twenty minutes of an hour, and the rest is a locker room, a kitchen table, a man who cannot explain why he has stopped being good. We score these on how much the losing costs the characters and how honestly the series admits it. Our shelf leans towards comedy, and towards the last few years, which has brought a crop of football and hockey series that are warmer than they are rigorous.

Start with [Friday Night Lights](/film/friday-night-lights) (86), for Kyle Chandler and the patience it shows people under pressure. Then [Dear England](/tv/dear-england) (80), which makes thoughtful management watchable. For something crueller, [Eastbound & Down](/tv/eastbound-and-down) (78) builds a comedy around an appalling man and makes you mind about him. After those, try the wrestlers of GLOW and the hockey players of Shoresy, both kinder than their language suggests.

For US. 14 titles; 14 listed here. Add `?region=XX` for another country.

- [*Crew Girl*](https://film.one/tv/crew-girl.md) — 2026 · Fi1m 56 · TV-14 · 6h 08m · Drama/Sport · on Netflix
Vivian Lin’s rowing drama is at its best on the water, where Bradley S. Creasser’s photography gives the sport real weight. On dry land it is a stiff private-school soap, rescued now and then by Jessica Paré as the mother.
- [*Dear England*](https://film.one/tv/dear-england.md) — 2026 · Fi1m 80 · 57m · Drama/Sport
Joseph Fiennes gives *Dear England* a persuasive centre as Gareth Southgate, and James Graham makes thoughtful leadership worth watching. We recommend this warm football drama, with reservations about asking one team to explain a country.
- [*Finding Her Edge*](https://film.one/tv/finding-her-edge.md) — 2026 · Fi1m 52 · TV-PG · Drama/Sport · on Netflix
Jennifer Iacopelli’s novel becomes eight gentle episodes about a skating family, a rink and the boy who came back. It is easy company and the Russo sisters are worth the time; the skating is chopped into pieces and nothing is allowed to stay wrong.
- [*Heated Rivalry*](https://film.one/tv/heated-rivalry.md) — 2025 · Fi1m 77 · TV-MA · Drama/Sport · on HBO Max
Hudson Williams and Connor Storrie make this explicit hockey romance worth following, even when the writing gives them too little to work with. We recommend it for the lovers, with modest expectations of the sport.
- [*Stick*](https://film.one/tv/stick.md) — 2025 · Fi1m 58 · TV-MA · Comedy/Drama · on Apple TV
Owen Wilson is easy company as a washed-up golfer coaching a teenage prodigy, and the series around him is pleasant, safe and thin. It borrows the shape of *Ted Lasso* without the jokes, and it handles its grief plot clumsily.
- [*Shoresy*](https://film.one/tv/shoresy.md) — 2022 · Fi1m 77 · TV-MA · Comedy/Drama · on Hulu
Jared Keeso’s hockey comedy earns its warmth through sharp wordplay and characters worth staying with. The crudity can become repetitive, but there is enough feeling here to make another round of insults worthwhile.
- [*Ted Lasso*](https://film.one/tv/ted-lasso.md) — 2020 · Fi1m 78 · TV-MA · Drama/Comedy · on Apple TV
*Ted Lasso* is a warm, well-played sports comedy with an uneven supply of jokes. Jason Sudeikis and a responsive ensemble make it worth the patience, though the cultural clashes can feel laboured.
- [*Betty*](https://film.one/tv/betty.md) — 2020 · Fi1m 74 · TV-MA · 30m · Comedy/Drama · on HBO Max
Crystal Moselle takes the skaters of *Skate Kitchen* and gives them twelve half-hours to roll around New York in. Little happens and it is a pleasure; the series is warmest when it stops trying to have plots.
- [*All American*](https://film.one/tv/all-american.md) — 2018 · Fi1m 68 · TV-14 · 43m · Drama/Sport · on Netflix
April Blair’s high-school drama moves a Crenshaw footballer into a Beverly Hills house and gets a great deal right about the journey between the two, and Daniel Ezra is a real find. The football, oddly, is the weakest thing in it.
- [*GLOW*](https://film.one/tv/glow.md) — 2017 · Fi1m 78 · TV-MA · Comedy/Drama · on Netflix
Liz Flahive and Carly Mensch’s comedy about a shoestring 1985 women’s wrestling show is better made and kinder than its Lycra suggests, and Betty Gilpin is the find. It takes half a season to get going and has more wrestlers than it can use.
- [*Haikyu!!*](https://film.one/tv/haikyu.md) — 2014 · Fi1m 80 · TV-14 · 24m · Animation/Comedy · on Crunchyroll, Netflix
Four seasons about a school volleyball team should not be this gripping, and for its first few episodes it is not. Stay past them and this becomes one of the best-made sports dramas we know, animated or not, provided you can stand the shouting.
- [*Eastbound & Down*](https://film.one/tv/eastbound-and-down.md) — 2009 · Fi1m 78 · TV-MA · 30m · Comedy/Drama · on HBO Max
Danny McBride, Jody Hill and Ben Best build a whole comedy around one appalling man and then, without announcing it, make you mind what happens to him. It is crude, sometimes lazily so, and Kenny Powers is the best thing McBride has done.
- [*Friday Night Lights*](https://film.one/tv/friday-night-lights.md) — 2006 · Fi1m 86 · TV-14 · 43m · Drama/Sport · on Amazon Prime Video, Paramount+
We recommend *Friday Night Lights* for Kyle Chandler’s patient authority and the care it takes with people under pressure. Its earnestness occasionally slows the drama, but the performances make that a forgivable fault.
- [*One Tree Hill*](https://film.one/tv/one-tree-hill.md) — 2003 · Fi1m 66 · TV-14 · 42m · Drama/Sport · on HBO Max, Hulu
The basketball and believable teenage hurt give *One Tree Hill* some pull. It is a decent prospect for soap devotees, provided familiar family quarrels and an almost complete lack of humour do not put them off.
