# Western series

A western on television has room the films never had: weeks to watch a town decide what it will put up with. That is what we are scoring. Anyone can shoot a horse against a sunset. We want to know whether the people are worth the length, whether the violence changes anything for them, and whether the series knows when it has said its piece. When these fall short it is usually because they run on past their ending.

Start with [Deadwood](/tv/deadwood), a 91 and the best case we know for the form, though the speeches could stand an interruption. [Westworld](/tv/westworld-2016), a 74, has a first season as exact and unsettling as anything here, before the puzzles take over. [Godless](/tv/godless) is handsome, patient and well acted, with Jeff Daniels and Merritt Wever the best of it. After those, [Little House on the Prairie](/tv/little-house-on-the-prairie) is the gentle end of the shelf, and more honest about whose land it was than the books were.
