*In a sentence:* Twenty-five minutes of carefully worded unpleasantness, much of it regrettably funny

> Julia Davis’s comedy gets its laughs from carefully chosen, deeply unkind language. Not every gag earns the discomfort, but enough of the writing works to recommend it to those who enjoy feeling slightly implicated.

## Synopsis

Julia Davis plays Dorothy in *Hunderby*, a comedy series with 25-minute episodes. Alexandra Roach plays Helene, Alex Macqueen plays Edmund and Rosie Cavaliero plays Hesther. The cast also includes Rebekah Staton as Annie, Daniel Lawrence Taylor as Geoff and Ben Bishop as Tom. Rufus Jones appears as Dr. Foggerty, while Julian Barratt provides the narration.

Davis creates the series and shares the writing credits with Barunka O’Shaughnessy. Tony Dow directs. The first series contains eight episodes; the second contains two.

## Review

*Hunderby* is good, uneven comedy, worth trying if verbal nastiness is your sort of entertainment. Julia Davis, its creator and one of its writers, gets more out of the exact wording of a joke than out of simply making it rude. That keeps the programme funny when it might have settled for being unpleasant. The misses are noticeable, though, and anyone unconvinced by this kind of humour will find little comfort in the care with which it is delivered.

Davis shares the writing credit with Barunka O’Shaughnessy, and their strongest asset is an ear for a phrase that goes a little further than we expect. We laughed at the language and felt uncomfortable about laughing. The precision does it: the wording is too carefully chosen to let us dismiss the offence as a passing bit of silliness. There is pleasure in hearing a joke so exactly shaped, even when its success makes us feel less than charitable towards ourselves.

Davis also plays Dorothy, with Alexandra Roach as Helene and Alex Macqueen as Edmund. Having the creator among the cast suits comedy in which delivery matters this much: these lines need to be spoken, not merely collected as proof of the writer’s cheek. The strongest moments make their point without seeming to wait for congratulations. We are less persuaded whenever the effort to be outrageous becomes more noticeable than the joke, and the programme does sometimes seem to be checking that we have noticed.

Tony Dow directs, and the useful measure of the direction here is how much room it leaves for language and story to work together. There is a continuing story beneath the jokes, which gives them something to build upon and gives us a reason to stay through a weaker passage. That helps keep *Hunderby* from exhausting itself as a collection of unpleasant remarks. At 25 minutes an episode, it also has a sensible length for comedy that risks wearing us down.

The problem is that precision cannot rescue every gag. Some of the humour earns a wince without earning a laugh, and those moments make the programme feel rather more satisfied with itself than we are. Its unpleasantness is part of the appeal, and we have no quarrel with that. A failed joke is harder to forgive when it seems to expect credit just for making everyone feel awkward.

By the standards of comedy built to make us squirm, *Hunderby* has enough control of its language to justify the discomfort. It does not need every joke to work, but its weaker stretches make concentrated exposure a less attractive proposition. One episode at a time seems a sensible arrangement. Try it with someone who can share a laugh without insisting that everyone involved has behaved well.

## Straight answers

**Is Hunderby worth watching?**

*Hunderby* is worth watching if carefully worded cruelty makes us laugh as well as wince; we score it 75 out of 100. The writing and delivery reward a taste for uncomfortable comedy, but some jokes mistake causing offence for being funny. We recommend one 25-minute episode at a time rather than concentrated exposure.

**How long is Hunderby, and what is it rated?**

*Hunderby* has episodes of about 25m and is rated TV-14 by the MPA in the US. It is a comedy series.

**Where can I watch Hunderby in the US?**

*Hunderby* is streaming on Hulu and Disney+ in the US. Availability is checked daily; the links above go straight to each service.

**How violent or frightening is Hunderby, and is it suitable for children?**

*Hunderby* carries a US TV-14 certificate, pointing towards teenage rather than children’s viewing; no UK certificate is supplied. Our caution concerns its deeply unkind language and humour that deliberately makes us uncomfortable, rather than any documented violence or frightening scenes. We would steer younger children away and recommend it only to teenagers comfortable with cruel comedy.

**How does Hunderby compare to Nighty Night?**

*Hunderby* offers the same appetite for discomfort and bad behaviour as [*Nighty Night*](https://film.one/tv/nighty-night), but we favour *Nighty Night* for its central comic monster, Jill Tyrrell. *Hunderby* earns its laughs through precisely worded nastiness, though some gags merely cause a wince; *Nighty Night* is the stronger recommendation for character-led cruelty, with a caveat about its weaker second series.

**What should I watch after Hunderby?**

After *Hunderby*, try [*Nighty Night*](https://film.one/tv/nighty-night) (2004, Fi1m 82): More discomfort, bad behaviour and jokes that refuse to apologise afterwards. Then [*Garth Marenghi's Darkplace*](https://film.one/tv/garth-marenghis-darkplace) (2004, Fi1m 83): A television spoof played with the solemnity its nonsense requires; and [*Kind Hearts and Coronets*](https://film.one/film/kind-hearts-and-coronets) (1949, Fi1m 91): Immaculate manners make some thoroughly disreputable intentions all the more amusing.

### Reviews we read (1)

- **The Guardian**, Sam Wollaston (75/100, inferred): Wollaston finds the comedy gloriously wrong and often funny, though not every gag works. He praises Julia Davis’s precise, wince-inducing use of language and notes that the story gives the jokes something to build on.
