> *The Four Seasons* is a decent, uneven relationship comedy, with Colman Domingo making its holiday company worth joining. There is warmth in the performances, but the writing too often settles for familiar complaints and intermittent laughs.

## Synopsis

Three couples take four trips together as their marriages and friendships come under scrutiny. Across the changing seasons, time away brings questions about ageing, commitment and what it means to remain close to people whose lives are changing. Tina Fey plays Kate, Steve Carell plays Nick Pagano and Colman Domingo plays Danny, alongside Kerri Kenney as Anne Pagano, Will Forte as Jack and Marco Calvani as Claude. Erika Henningsen plays Ginny. The friends reassess their relationships while negotiating the complications of sharing their holidays with people who have long been part of their lives.

## Review

*The Four Seasons* is a decent, uneven comedy about the difficulty of remaining good company as we get older. Three couples take four holidays together, bringing their marriages and their accumulated opinions of one another along. The cast makes it worth trying, though the jokes are too intermittent for us to recommend it simply as a comedy. Its more interesting concern is what happens to friendship when people begin to question arrangements everyone else has grown comfortable with.

Colman Domingo, playing Danny, does most to make the gathering feel worth attending. We laughed at his delivery, and felt relieved to find a friend whose company we actively wanted to keep. His comic timing makes the humour seem spontaneous and gives the group some much-needed warmth. Steve Carell’s Nick Pagano supplies another reason to stay: Carell makes the unhappiness in this material register without insisting that we stop finding these people ridiculous.

Tina Fey’s Kate belongs to an ensemble with plenty of ability to spare, including Kerri Kenney, Will Forte, Marco Calvani and Erika Henningsen. The writing, by a team including Fey, Lang Fisher and Tracey Wigfield, does not always give those actors enough to distinguish a familiar marital grievance from a fresh joke. There is recognisable truth in the way a friendship group can make everybody’s relationship its business. Too often, however, a familiar complaint arrives without a sufficiently good joke.

Tim Orr’s cinematography and Sharon Lomofsky’s production design give the holidays an inviting appearance, helping establish the pleasure these friends might take in going away together. The settings do their share of making this comfortable viewing, even when the company becomes difficult. Jeff Richmond’s music contributes to the easygoing mood and suits the gentler comedy. It is less helpful when the conversations become uncomfortable, when a little less reassurance would let the friction register more strongly.

The editing, shared by Kyle Gilman, Ken Eluto, Sarah Lillian Pachter and Martina Nilgitsalanont, has the harder task of moving between jokes and marital unhappiness. Some transitions allow the comedy and the hurt to belong to the same conversation. Others feel like a signal that we are now expected to take these people seriously, before their behaviour has earned that attention. Those changes of mood expose how little we sometimes know about a character beyond their current grievance.

The first series spreads its holidays across eight episodes. That is room enough for a relationship comedy to show why people keep choosing one another after the easy explanations have run out. There are moments of tenderness here that make the extra time worthwhile, particularly when the performers can suggest affection without having to explain it. There are also stretches when another round of complaints adds little to our understanding of the couples.

We would give it a try for Domingo and Carell, with expectations set for a gentle, occasionally perceptive evening. Anyone hoping for a reliably sharp comedy may find the pauses between laughs too long. If the prospect of going away with the same friends again already sounds exhausting, this is unlikely to change that.

## What the critics say

The reviews lean positive on The Four Seasons, with praise clustering around its ensemble and its observations about middle-aged friendship and marriage. The warmer responses find the holiday gatherings funny, moving and welcoming despite the characters’ flaws. Colman Domingo draws particular praise, while The Guardian also singles out Steve Carell. For several critics, the appeal lies in the recognisable strains of long relationships and the cast’s ability to make small emotional moments count.

The spread is wide, however, and critics disagree over how well the comedy and drama fit together. Some find the gentler pace companionable; others find too few laughs and too little character development. Variety identifies an unsettled tone and a weakness for prolonged character study. The Telegraph goes further, finding the friendships bitter and the exchanges short on wit or insight. The central divide is over whether this company feels worth spending time with.

## Straight answers

**Is The Four Seasons worth watching?**

*The Four Seasons* is worth trying for Colman Domingo and Steve Carell, though we scored it 64 because the jokes arrive too intermittently for a reliably sharp comedy. It suits viewers content with a gentle, occasionally perceptive relationship comedy about three couples holidaying together. Anyone already weary of friends airing marital grievances will find little here to change their mind.

**Where can I watch The Four Seasons in Romania?**

*The Four Seasons* is streaming on Netflix in Romania. Availability is checked daily; the links above go straight to each service.

**How violent or frightening is The Four Seasons, and is it suitable for children?**

*The Four Seasons* is not violent or frightening, but its UK 15 and US TV-MA certificates mark it as a comedy for adults rather than children. The material concerns marriages under strain, ageing and friends questioning one another's arrangements, with language and adult themes to match. Older teenagers may follow it, though the complaints of middle-aged couples are unlikely to hold them.

**How does The Four Seasons compare to Another Year?**

*The Four Seasons* is the lighter and less demanding of the two, a gentle comedy that softens its friction where [*Another Year*](https://film.one/film/another-year) lets discomfort sit beneath the hospitality. Mike Leigh's film observes adult friendship more patiently and is the better work. Choose the series for an easygoing evening with a strong ensemble; choose the film if you can bear company that is unbearable and heartbreaking at once.

**What should I watch after The Four Seasons?**

After *The Four Seasons*, try [*Another Year*](https://film.one/film/another-year) (2010, Fi1m 87): For adult friendships observed patiently, with more discomfort beneath the hospitality. Then [*The Big Chill*](https://film.one/film/the-big-chill) (1983, Fi1m 67): Old friends reunite and discover how little nostalgia settles their disagreements; and [*The Decline of the American Empire*](https://film.one/film/the-decline-of-the-american-empire) (1986, Fi1m 72): Friends discuss sex and relationships with considerably less concern for politeness.
