Most critics find this remake a loud, dull disappointment, and the reviews are clearer about what they dislike than about what they admire. Where praise appears it goes to the monsters: the giant scorpions and the Medusa sequence are the moments most often singled out as the spectacle doing its job. Among the cast, Mads Mikkelsen draws the warmest notices, with Ralph Fiennes’s Hades and Gemma Arterton also mentioned as bright spots. Variety alone picks out Ramin Djawadi’s score as the most satisfying element.

The reservations are near-unanimous and cluster on the retrofitted 3D, which several reviews describe as darker, foggier and headache-inducing, and on a stilted script and a dull hero. The spread is wide but lopsided: fourteen negative verdicts against a handful of mixed ones. The Hollywood Reporter is the lone clearly positive voice, finding the adventure entertaining despite the 3D, and The Guardian calls it amiable, especially in its breakneck second half.
