Alan Bleasdale’s seven-part drama about a city council, its preening leader and the headmaster who says no is angry, funny and frightening, and Robert Lindsay’s Michael Murray is a performance we have not stopped thinking about since. It is also long, and its conspiracy plot is its weakest part.
Perry and Croft’s holiday-camp sitcom is as broad as its yellow blazers and warmer than it has any need to be. The pool gag comes round every episode; so, more surprisingly, does a real sadness about people paid to have fun.
David Yates strips the longest book in the series to 138 brisk, grey minutes and hands Imelda Staunton the best villain the films have had. It is the most grown-up Potter yet and, for long stretches, the least magical.
