The reviews lean negative: eleven critics come away unhappy, six approve, and eight sit somewhere between. Almost everyone, whatever the verdict, praises Rachel Zegler, whose clear singing voice and earnest, charismatic performance are singled out even by critics who dislike the film around her. The warmer notices call it lively, sweet and among Disney’s better live-action remakes, and several enjoy the new songs.

The complaints cluster on the digital dwarfs, which most critics find uncanny or distracting, and on a muddle of competing tones and half-justified revisions. Others find the new songs forgettable. Gal Gadot’s Evil Queen divides opinion: the Los Angeles Times says she gets the best musical number, while The New Yorker finds her ineffective. The spread is wide, running from approval at The Hollywood Reporter and Variety to The Guardian, which finds the film exhausting, and The Independent, which calls it lazy.
