Biography
Dominique Baffier is a French archaeologist and prehistorian specialising in Palaeolithic parietal art. She trained at the École du Louvre and the Sorbonne, studying under André Leroi-Gourhan, and joined the CNRS in 1973. She later worked on excavations at Pincevent and, from the early 1990s, directed research at the Arcy-sur-Cure caves.
In 2000 she was appointed curator of the Chauvet Cave, a role she held until 2014, overseeing conservation and public communication. She appears as herself in Werner Herzog’s 2010 documentary Cave of Forgotten Dreams, discussing the cave’s paintings. Baffier is an officer of the French Order of Merit.
