Biography
Gilles Tosello is a French plasticien and prehistorian specialising in Palaeolithic art. Born in 1956 in Cannes, he studied graphic arts at the École Nationale Supérieure des Arts Décoratifs in Paris and obtained a doctorate in prehistory from Paris 1 University in 1997.
He has worked as an illustrator for magazines and museums, and since 1998 has been a member of the scientific team studying the Chauvet Cave in southern France. Tosello directed the creation of major reproductions of its panels, including the Panel of the Lions and the Panel of the Horses, for the Caverne du Pont d'Arc replica that opened in 2015. He has also contributed to replicas of other sites such as Cosquer Cave.
Tosello appears as himself in Werner Herzog's documentary Cave of Forgotten Dreams (2010) and in several other French television documentaries on prehistoric art.
