Biography
Lautaro Núñez Atencio is a Chilean archaeologist and anthropologist. Born in Iquique in 1938, he studied history and geography at the University of Chile, with postgraduate work at Charles University in Prague and a doctorate in anthropological sciences from the University of Tokyo.
He has conducted extensive research on the pre-Hispanic history of northern Chile, serving as director of the Museo San Pedro de Atacama and later at the Universidad Católica del Norte. Núñez received the Premio Nacional de Historia in 2002. He appears as himself, an archaeologist, in Patricio Guzmán’s 2010 documentary Nostalgia for the Light.
