Biography
Alain Cuny (born René Xavier Marie Alain Cuny) was a French actor of stage and screen. He appeared in films from the 1940s onwards and worked extensively in both French and Italian cinema.
His notable screen roles include the philosopher Steiner in Federico Fellini’s La Dolce Vita (1960), Henri Tournier in Louis Malle’s The Lovers (1958), General Leone in Francesco Rosi’s Many Wars Ago (1970), and Louis-Prosper Claudel in Camille Claudel (1988). He was also known for collaborations with directors such as Marcel Carné, Michelangelo Antonioni and Luis Buñuel. On stage he performed with the Théâtre national populaire and Odéon-Théâtre de France, and was closely associated with the works of Paul Claudel and Antonin Artaud.
Cuny received a César Award nomination for Best Supporting Actor for Camille Claudel and was awarded the Joseph Plateau Lifetime Achievement Award in 1992.
