Biography
Alain Robbe-Grillet (1922–2008) was a French writer and filmmaker. He was a leading figure in the Nouveau Roman literary movement of the 1950s and 1960s, alongside Nathalie Sarraute, Michel Butor and Claude Simon. He wrote the screenplay for Alain Resnais’s Last Year at Marienbad (1961), which won the Golden Lion at the Venice Film Festival.
Robbe-Grillet went on to direct and write his own feature films, beginning with L’Immortelle (1963), which received the Louis Delluc Prize. His subsequent films include Trans-Europ-Express (1966), The Man Who Lies (1968), Eden and After (1970), Successive Slidings of Pleasure (1974) and The Beautiful Prisoner (1983). He was elected to the Académie française in 2004.
