Biography
Alan Hicks is an Australian documentary filmmaker and former musician. Born in Wollongong, New South Wales, he studied jazz at William Paterson University in New Jersey before transitioning to film.
His debut feature Keep On Keepin’ On (2014), about jazz trumpeter Clark Terry, won the Audience Award and Best New Director prize at the Tribeca Film Festival, along with awards at IDFA and other festivals, and was shortlisted for the Academy Award for Best Documentary Feature. Hicks co-directed and co-wrote the 2018 Netflix documentary Quincy with Rashida Jones. The film premiered at the Toronto International Film Festival and won the Grammy Award for Best Music Film.
