Biography
Alan Sillitoe was an English writer. He was born on 4 March 1928 in Nottingham and died on 25 April 2010 in London.
Sillitoe left school at 14 and worked in a factory before national service in the RAF. After contracting tuberculosis he lived in France and Spain. His debut novel Saturday Night and Sunday Morning was published in 1958 and he wrote the screenplay for the 1960 film adaptation directed by Karel Reisz. He also adapted his 1959 short story collection The Loneliness of the Long Distance Runner for the 1962 film.
Sillitoe published novels, short stories, poetry and screenplays. He was married to the poet Ruth Fainlight.
