Biography
Alexander Nikolayevich Sokurov is a Russian filmmaker born on 14 June 1951 in the village of Podorvikha, Irkutsk Oblast, in the Soviet Union. He graduated from the History Department of Nizhny Novgorod University in 1974 and from the Gerasimov Institute of Cinematography (VGIK) in 1979.
Sokurov directed Mother and Son (1997) and Russian Ark (2002), the latter filmed in a single unedited shot. His other notable works include Faust (2011), which received the Golden Lion at the Venice Film Festival. He was named People's Artist of Russia in 2004.
