Alex Brightman gives extravagant characters distinctive voices, backed by considerable technique. We like him in musical animation, but even his energy cannot make muddled storytelling easy to follow.

Alex Brightman makes an animated eccentric easy to pick out by ear. He gives these characters pronounced vocal inflections and brings a physical performer’s energy to the recording. In Hazbin Hotel (2024), he voices Sir Pentious and Adam, two opportunities for his taste for exaggeration. We like him in musical animation, where singing and comedy can make use of such emphatic character work. The reservation is how long a performance can stay that emphatic without becoming tiring.
His leading stage roles explain the scale of it. He originated Dewey Finn in School of Rock – The Musical (2015), followed by the title role in Beetlejuice The Musical (2019), directed by Alex Timbers. Both demanded physical comedy and considerable energy. The useful distinction in School of Rock – The Musical was his generosity towards the young ensemble; a forceful leading performance still left room for the other performers. In Beetlejuice The Musical, he built his own interpretation of a film role instead of settling for an impression.
The gravelly voice is carefully made. Brightman uses a trained vocal technique for Beetlejuice and for Fizzarolli in Helluva Boss (2020), another part in adult animation. That gives his stage and recording work a practical connection beyond their taste for extravagant characters. But the sustained intensity of Beetlejuice The Musical can be exhausting, and we would be wary of treating that delivery as suitable for every part.
Hazbin Hotel is the place we would start, with a caveat about the series rather than its cast. We enjoyed the songs and voices, which kept us interested when the crowded storytelling became hard work. Brightman contributes to what works in Vivienne Medrano’s adult animated musical, but the performers cannot explain everything the writing leaves unclear. At times there is simply too much going on, however willing we are to follow these extravagant characters. Try it for the musical comedy, but do not expect the storytelling to be as assured as the singing.
Biography
Alex Brightman is an American actor and writer. Born Alexander Michael Brightman on 5 February 1987 in Santa Clara, California, he trained at New York University’s Tisch School of the Arts and began his career in musical theatre.
He originated the role of Dewey Finn in the Broadway musical School of Rock (2015), earning a Tony Award nomination for Best Actor in a Musical, and later originated the title role in Beetlejuice The Musical (2019), receiving another nomination. Other Broadway credits include Wicked, Matilda The Musical, Big Fish and Spamalot.
Since 2020 he has voiced Fizzarolli and Robo Fizz in the animated series Helluva Boss, and since 2024 he has voiced Sir Pentious and Adam in Hazbin Hotel. He has also appeared in live-action television series including The Blacklist and Law & Order: Special Victims Unit.
