Biography

Alexandre Mnouchkine was a Russian-born French film producer. Born on 10 February 1908 in St Petersburg, he moved to Paris in 1925 and entered the cinema industry in 1932. He founded the production company Les Films Ariane in 1945.

Over a long career he produced or co-produced more than fifty films. These include That Man from Rio (1964), Cartouche (1962), The Magnificent One (1973), Get Out Your Handkerchiefs (1978), The Inquisitor (1981) and The Name of the Rose (1986). He received a César d'honneur in 1982 and served on the jury of the 1987 Moscow International Film Festival. Mnouchkine died on 3 April 1993 in Neuilly-sur-Seine.
