Biography
Alexandre Rignault was a French actor who appeared in more than a hundred films and numerous television productions between 1931 and 1985. Born in Paris on 14 February 1901, he began his career in the theatre after writing to Louis Jouvet in the mid-1920s; Jouvet engaged him for utility roles in his company. He later performed in works by Gogol, Achard, Romains and Giraudoux, including the premieres of Amphitryon 38, Intermezzo and Ondine.
On screen Rignault specialised in supporting parts, often as policemen, innkeepers, peasants or officials. He is known for roles in La Chienne (1931), A Man's Head (1933), Liliom (1934), The Return of Don Camillo (1953), Eyes Without a Face (1960) as Inspector Parot, Angelique (1964), The Hunchback of Paris (1959) and My American Uncle (1980). His final screen appearance was as Gregor Kovalic in the 1985 television series Châteauvallon.
Rignault was married to actress Eugénie Gayet from 1922 until his death in Saint-Mandé on 31 March 1985.
